Technology that Changes Life As We Know IT
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is software that can create insights by identifying patterns in large swaths of data. AI technology can use these insights to learn and improve its own software and functioning. The primary success with AI technology is its ability to find patterns that can be overlooked by the human eye. AI software has even begun to outperform humans at certain tasks in the healthcare, law, transportation, and computer programing fields. Despite the large growth in AI, this software is ill-equipped to completely replace human labor. Current AI technology can perform small, individual tasks, but cannot integrate these tasks into a holistic worldview - as of now, only humans have that capability.
Past AI development focused on coding and digitizing the knowledge of experts, but recent AI technology is instead creating self-learning systems. This transformation into self-learning AI, referred to as Machine Learning (ML), has generated cross-industry digital technologies - from face and speech recognition to interfaces to healthcare diagnostic capabilities. The self-learning, automated nature of ML reduces both cost and time spent on individual tasks. ML is anticipated to replace many small human tasks in the near future, automating job candidate selection and monitoring stock trading, to name a few examples.
The automation of tasks through intelligent machines does present challenges - namely in the form of privacy and security concerns. In order to perform automated tasks, AI machines must be equipped with an individual’s personal information. Despite the vast innovations and improvements in AI, security regulations have not kept up. The lack of mandated, regulated security measures in AI leaves an individual’s personal information susceptible to breeches and hacks.
